ইংরেজিতে কথা বলার সময় direction বা movement বোঝানো অনেক শিক্ষার্থীর জন্য confusing হয়ে যায়। আমরা বাংলায় খুব সহজে বলি “রাস্তা ধরে হাঁটলাম”, “রাস্তা পার হলাম”, “জঙ্গলের ভিতর দিয়ে গেলাম”, বা “স্কুলের পাশ দিয়ে চলে গেলাম”। কিন্তু এগুলো English-এ বলতে গেলে কোন preposition ব্যবহার করবো—along, across, through নাকি past—এটা নিয়ে অনেকেই দ্বিধায় পড়ে যায়।
বিশেষ করে যারা spoken English in Bangladesh শিখছে, IELTS preparation Bangladesh করছে, অথবা English spoken course করছে, তাদের জন্য এই চারটি preposition খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কারণ IELTS Speaking, daily conversation, storytelling, direction giving, travel experience, map description—সব জায়গায় এগুলো বারবার ব্যবহার হয়।
Along, across, through এবং past দেখতে ছোট শব্দ হলেও এগুলোর meaning এবং usage আলাদা। এগুলো ঠিকভাবে বুঝতে পারলে আপনার English আরও natural, fluent এবং confident শোনাবে।
Along: কোনো পথ ধরে চলা
Along ব্যবহার হয় যখন আমরা কোনো রাস্তা, নদী, পথ, লাইন, দেয়াল, beach, corridor বা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট direction ধরে সামনে এগোই।
সহজভাবে:
Along = পথ ধরে চলা
যখন movement কোনো line বা route follow করে হয়, তখন along ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Examples:
We walked along the river.
আমরা নদীর ধারে/নদী ধরে হাঁটলাম।
He drove along the road.
সে রাস্তা ধরে গাড়ি চালাল।
They walked along the beach.
তারা beach ধরে হাঁটল।
There are many trees along the street.
রাস্তার ধারে অনেক গাছ আছে।
এখানে খেয়াল করুন, along ব্যবহার করলে বোঝায় আপনি কোনো path বা line-এর direction follow করছেন। আপনি রাস্তা cross করছেন না, রাস্তার ভিতর দিয়ে যাচ্ছেন না, শুধু রাস্তা বা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট line ধরে এগোচ্ছেন।
Daily spoken English-এ along খুব useful। যেমন:
Go along this road and you will find the shop.
এই রাস্তা ধরে যান, দোকানটি পেয়ে যাবেন।
Direction দেওয়ার সময় এই sentence খুব common।
Across: এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে যাওয়া
Across ব্যবহার হয় যখন আমরা কোনো জায়গার এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে যাই। এটি সাধারণত রাস্তা, নদী, মাঠ, bridge, room বা open space পার হওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
সহজভাবে:
Across = এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে যাওয়া
Examples:
She walked across the street.
সে রাস্তা পার হলো।
He swam across the river.
সে নদী সাঁতরে পার হলো।
They ran across the field.
তারা মাঠের এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে দৌড়াল।
There is a bridge across the river.
নদীর উপর দিয়ে একটি bridge আছে।
Across মানে হলো কোনো surface বা area cross করে অন্য পাশে যাওয়া। এখানে movement-এর focus হচ্ছে crossing। অর্থাৎ আপনি একটি জায়গা পার হচ্ছেন।
অনেক শিক্ষার্থী along এবং across নিয়ে confused হয়। মনে রাখবেন:
Walk along the road = রাস্তা ধরে হাঁটা
Walk across the road = রাস্তা পার হওয়া
এই দুই sentence-এর meaning একদম আলাদা। আপনি যদি বলেন “I walked along the road”, তাহলে বোঝাবে আপনি রাস্তার direction ধরে হাঁটলেন। কিন্তু “I walked across the road” মানে আপনি রাস্তার এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে গেলেন।
Through: ভেতর দিয়ে যাওয়া
Through ব্যবহার হয় যখন আমরা কোনো জায়গার ভিতর দিয়ে যাই। সাধারণত forest, tunnel, room, crowd, city, door, window বা কোনো enclosed area-এর ভিতর দিয়ে movement বোঝাতে through ব্যবহার করা হয়।
সহজভাবে:
Through = ভেতর দিয়ে যাওয়া
Examples:
We walked through the forest.
আমরা জঙ্গলের ভিতর দিয়ে হাঁটলাম।
The train went through the tunnel.
ট্রেনটি tunnel-এর ভিতর দিয়ে গেল।
He came through the door.
সে দরজা দিয়ে ভিতরে এল।
She walked through the crowd.
সে ভিড়ের ভিতর দিয়ে হাঁটল।
Through ব্যবহার করলে সাধারণত বোঝায় আপনি কোনো জায়গার ভিতরে প্রবেশ করেছেন, ভিতর দিয়ে গিয়েছেন, এবং অনেক সময় অন্য পাশে বের হয়েছেন।
Across এবং through-এর পার্থক্যও খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
He walked across the park.
সে park-এর এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে হাঁটল।
He walked through the park.
সে park-এর ভিতর দিয়ে হাঁটল।
দুই sentence কাছাকাছি মনে হলেও focus আলাদা। Across-এ focus হলো one side to another side। Through-এ focus হলো ভিতর দিয়ে movement।
IELTS Speaking-এ travel experience বা place description দিতে গেলে through খুব দরকার হয়।
Example:
When I visited the village, I walked through a beautiful green field and enjoyed the fresh air.
এই ধরনের sentence আপনার answer-কে vivid এবং natural করে তোলে।
Past: পাশ দিয়ে চলে যাওয়া
Past ব্যবহার হয় যখন আমরা কোনো ব্যক্তি, জায়গা বা বস্তুর পাশ দিয়ে চলে যাই, কিন্তু সেখানে থামি না, ভিতরে ঢুকি না, বা cross করার বিষয়টিও মূল focus নয়।
সহজভাবে:
Past = পাশ দিয়ে চলে যাওয়া
Examples:
I walked past the school.
আমি স্কুলের পাশ দিয়ে হেঁটে গেলাম।
He drove past me.
সে আমার পাশ দিয়ে গাড়ি চালিয়ে চলে গেল।
We went past a small market.
আমরা একটি ছোট বাজারের পাশ দিয়ে চলে গেলাম।
She walked past the shop without stopping.
সে না থেমে দোকানের পাশ দিয়ে চলে গেল।
Past-এর মূল idea হলো “pass by”। অর্থাৎ কোনো কিছুর কাছ দিয়ে চলে যাওয়া। আপনি সেখানে ঢুকছেন না, থামছেন না, শুধু পাশ দিয়ে যাচ্ছেন।
Direction দেওয়ার সময় past খুব common:
Go past the bank, then turn left.
ব্যাংকের পাশ দিয়ে সামনে যান, তারপর বামে ঘুরুন।
এখানে bank শুধু landmark হিসেবে ব্যবহার হয়েছে। আপনি bank-এর ভিতরে যাচ্ছেন না।
Quick Difference: Along vs Across vs Through vs Past
এই চারটি preposition মনে রাখার সবচেয়ে সহজ উপায় হলো movement-এর direction বোঝা।
Along = পথ ধরে চলা
যেমন: along the road, along the river, along the beach
Across = এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে যাওয়া
যেমন: across the street, across the river, across the field
Through = ভিতর দিয়ে যাওয়া
যেমন: through the forest, through the tunnel, through the crowd
Past = পাশ দিয়ে চলে যাওয়া
যেমন: past the school, past the shop, past me
একটি simple example দিয়ে চারটি preposition আরও পরিষ্কার করা যায়:
I walked along the road.
আমি রাস্তা ধরে হাঁটলাম।
I walked across the road.
আমি রাস্তা পার হলাম।
I walked through the market.
আমি বাজারের ভিতর দিয়ে হাঁটলাম।
I walked past the market.
আমি বাজারের পাশ দিয়ে চলে গেলাম।
এখানে একই movement হলেও preposition change করার কারণে meaning বদলে যাচ্ছে।
Common Mistakes শিক্ষার্থীরা করে
অনেক শিক্ষার্থী বলে:
I walked through the road.
কিন্তু সাধারণত road-এর ক্ষেত্রে through ব্যবহার করা ঠিক নয়, কারণ road-এর ভিতর দিয়ে যাওয়া হয় না। Correct হবে:
I walked along the road.
অথবা
I walked across the road.
আরেকটি common mistake:
I walked across the forest.
এই sentence possible হলেও natural context-এ অনেক সময় better হবে:
I walked through the forest.
কারণ forest-এর ভিতর দিয়ে যাওয়ার idea বোঝাতে through বেশি natural।
আরেকটি mistake:
I went along the school.
যদি বোঝাতে চান স্কুলের পাশ দিয়ে গেছেন, তাহলে correct হবে:
I went past the school.
IELTS Speaking-এ এগুলো কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ?
IELTS Speaking test-এ আপনাকে অনেক সময় place, journey, travel, childhood memory, hometown, school, city, road, transport বা daily routine নিয়ে কথা বলতে হয়। এসব topic-এ movement বোঝানোর জন্য preposition খুব দরকার হয়।
Example:
I usually walk along the main road in the morning.
There is a small bridge across the river near my village.
I once walked through a beautiful forest during a trip.
Every day, I go past a school on my way to work.
এই ধরনের sentence ব্যবহার করলে আপনার answer বেশি specific, descriptive এবং natural শোনাবে।
IELTS Speaking-এ শুধু vocabulary জানলেই হবে না। ছোট preposition ঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করতে পারাও Grammar Accuracy বাড়ায়। Examiner আপনার communication কতটা clear এবং natural তা লক্ষ্য করেন। তাই along, across, through এবং past-এর মতো preposition ঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করা Band Score improvement-এ সাহায্য করতে পারে।
Spoken English Practice
নিজের daily life থেকে sentence বানিয়ে practice করুন।
Examples:
I walk along this road every morning.
I cross across the street carefully.
I go through the market to reach my office.
I walk past a mosque every day.
The bus goes past my house.
We drove along the highway.
The children ran across the playground.
The cat went through the window.
প্রতিদিন ৫–১০টি sentence বললে এগুলো আপনার natural speaking habit হয়ে যাবে।
Final Thoughts
Along, across, through এবং past—এই চারটি preposition ছোট হলেও English communication-এর জন্য খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এগুলো direction, movement এবং location বোঝাতে সাহায্য করে। ভুল preposition ব্যবহার করলে sentence-এর meaning বদলে যেতে পারে বা unnatural শোনাতে পারে।
মনে রাখুন:
Along মানে পথ ধরে চলা।
Across মানে এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে যাওয়া।
Through মানে ভিতর দিয়ে যাওয়া।
Past মানে পাশ দিয়ে চলে যাওয়া।
যারা spoken English, IELTS Speaking বা daily conversation improve করতে চান, তাদের জন্য এই চারটি preposition খুব ভালোভাবে practice করা জরুরি। Grammar শেখার সবচেয়ে ভালো উপায় হলো rule মুখস্থ করা নয়, বরং real-life sentence তৈরি করা। তাই আজ থেকেই নিজের চারপাশের movement English-এ বলার চেষ্টা করুন।
আপনি কোথায় হাঁটছেন, কোন রাস্তা পার হচ্ছেন, কোন জায়গার ভিতর দিয়ে যাচ্ছেন, আর কোন জায়গার পাশ দিয়ে যাচ্ছেন—সবকিছু English-এ বলুন। ছোট preposition ঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করতে পারলেই আপনার spoken English আরও natural, accurate এবং confident হয়ে উঠবে।
