IELTS Writing Task 2-এ অনেক শিক্ষার্থী ভালো grammar জানেন, vocabulary-ও মোটামুটি সমৃদ্ধ থাকে, তবুও কাঙ্ক্ষিত band score পান না। এর অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ হলো Coherence and Cohesion সম্পর্কে পর্যাপ্ত ধারণা না থাকা। IELTS Writing-এর চারটি marking criteria-এর মধ্যে Coherence and Cohesion একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ, যা আপনার overall writing score-এর 25% নির্ধারণ করে।
অনেক candidate মনে করেন শুধুমাত্র advanced vocabulary এবং complex grammar ব্যবহার করলেই Band 7 বা Band 8 পাওয়া সম্ভব। বাস্তবে examiner শুধু আপনি কী লিখেছেন তা দেখেন না, বরং আপনি আপনার ideas কতটা logically organise করেছেন এবং এক paragraph থেকে অন্য paragraph-এ কতটা smoothly transition করেছেন সেটিও মূল্যায়ন করেন।তাই IELTS Writing-এ ভালো score করতে চাইলে Coherence and Cohesion সম্পর্কে পরিষ্কার ধারণা থাকা অপরিহার্য।
Coherence কী?
সহজ ভাষায় বলতে গেলে, Coherence হলো আপনার essay-এর logical flow এবং overall clarity। অর্থাৎ, আপনার ideas একে অপরের সাথে কতটা সংযুক্ত, organised এবং meaningful তা Coherence-এর মাধ্যমে প্রকাশ পায়। যখন একজন examiner আপনার essay পড়েন, তখন তিনি দেখতে চান আপনার arguments এবং explanations এমনভাবে সাজানো হয়েছে কি না যাতে পুরো essay সহজে follow করা যায়। ধরুন আপনি "Online Education" নিয়ে একটি essay লিখছেন। প্রথম paragraph-এ online learning-এর সুবিধা আলোচনা করলেন, এরপর হঠাৎ কোনো connection ছাড়া technology addiction নিয়ে লিখতে শুরু করলেন। এতে essay-এর logical flow নষ্ট হয়ে যাবে। অন্যদিকে যদি প্রতিটি paragraph একটি নির্দিষ্ট idea develop করে এবং সব ideas main topic-এর সাথে সম্পর্কিত থাকে, তাহলে essay coherent হবে। একটি coherent essay পড়তে গেলে reader কখনো confused হয় না। সে সহজেই বুঝতে পারে writer কোন point থেকে কোন point-এ যাচ্ছে।
Cohesion কী?
Cohesion হলো essay-এর বিভিন্ন sentence এবং paragraph-এর মধ্যে connection তৈরি করার প্রক্রিয়া। সহজভাবে বললে, Coherence যেখানে overall structure নিয়ে কাজ করে, সেখানে Cohesion কাজ করে sentence-level এবং paragraph-level linking নিয়ে Cohesion তৈরি করতে আমরা বিভিন্ন linking words, referencing এবং transition techniques ব্যবহার করি। উদাহরণ হিসেবে:

Furthermore
Moreover
However
Therefore
As a result
In contrast
On the other hand
এই ধরনের linking devices reader-কে বুঝতে সাহায্য করে যে একটি idea-এর সাথে পরবর্তী idea-এর সম্পর্ক কী। তবে একটি বিষয় মনে রাখা জরুরি। অনেক শিক্ষার্থী মনে করেন যত বেশি linking words ব্যবহার করবেন, score তত বেশি হবে। এটি একটি বড় misconception Examiner natural cohesion দেখতে চান, forced cohesion নয়।
Coherence এবং Cohesion-এর মধ্যে পার্থক্য
অনেক শিক্ষার্থী এই দুটি term-কে একই জিনিস মনে করেন, কিন্তু বাস্তবে তারা ভিন্ন।Coherence হলো essay-এর overall organisation এবং logical development। অন্যদিকে Cohesion হলো sentences এবং paragraphs-এর মধ্যে smooth connection। ধরুন একটি বাড়ি নির্মাণ করা হচ্ছে। সেই বাড়ির blueprint এবং design হলো Coherence। আর ইট, বালি, সিমেন্ট দিয়ে সব অংশকে যুক্ত করার কাজ হলো Cohesion। একটি ভালো IELTS essay-এর জন্য দুটোই সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
IELTS Examiner কী খোঁজেন?
IELTS Writing-এর ক্ষেত্রে examiner সাধারণত নিচের বিষয়গুলো evaluate করেন:
Ideas logical order-এ আছে কি না
প্রতিটি paragraph-এর clear purpose আছে কি না
Main argument ভালোভাবে develop করা হয়েছে কি না
Linking devices naturalভাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে কি না
Paragraphing effective হয়েছে কি না
যদি essay-এর structure confusing হয় অথবা ideas randomly present করা হয়, তাহলে Coherence and Cohesion score কমে যেতে পারে।
Strong Coherence তৈরি করার উপায়
প্রথমেই essay লেখা শুরু করার আগে planning করার অভ্যাস তৈরি করতে হবে। অনেক শিক্ষার্থী question দেখেই লেখা শুরু করেন। এর ফলে essay-এর মাঝপথে idea পরিবর্তন হয় এবং logical flow নষ্ট হয়ে যায়।
Essay plan তৈরি করার সময় নির্ধারণ করুন:
Introduction-এ কী লিখবেন
Body Paragraph 1-এ কোন argument থাকবে
Body Paragraph 2-এ কোন supporting point থাকবে
Conclusion কীভাবে শেষ করবেন
এই simple planning আপনার essay-কে অনেক বেশি coherent করে তুলবে।
Strong Cohesion তৈরি করার উপায়
Cohesion উন্নত করার জন্য শুধুমাত্র linking words মুখস্থ করলেই হবে না। বরং sentence connection-এর উপর focus করতে হবে। উদাহরণ:
"Many students prefer online learning. It offers greater flexibility." এখানে দ্বিতীয় sentence-এ "It" ব্যবহার করে previous idea reference করা হয়েছে। এটিও cohesion-এর একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ technique।
আরেকটি উদাহরণ: "Online education is becoming increasingly popular. As a result, many universities are expanding their digital learning platforms." এখানে cause-and-effect relationship তৈরি হয়েছে, যা essay-কে আরও cohesive করে।
Common Mistakes That Lower Your Score
সবচেয়ে common mistake হলো excessive linking words ব্যবহার করা। অনেক শিক্ষার্থী এমন essay লেখেন যেখানে প্রায় প্রতিটি sentence শুরু হয় "Moreover", "Furthermore", "In addition", "Besides" দিয়ে। এতে writing artificial শোনায়। আরেকটি common mistake হলো paragraph structure maintain না করা। এক paragraph-এর মধ্যে অনেক unrelated idea যোগ করলে Coherence নষ্ট হয়ে যায়। এছাড়া idea development-এর অভাবও একটি বড় সমস্যা। শুধু point উল্লেখ করলেই হবে না; সেটি explanation এবং example দিয়ে support করতে হবে।
Band 7+ Essay-এ Coherence and Cohesion কেমন হয়?
Band 7 বা তার বেশি score পাওয়া essay-এ সাধারণত:
Clear introduction থাকে
Well-organised body paragraphs থাকে
Logical progression দেখা যায়
Appropriate linking devices ব্যবহার করা হয়
Ideas fully developed থাকে
Paragraphing effective হয়
এই ধরনের essay পড়তে examiner-এর কোনো কষ্ট হয় না। পুরো argument smoothly flow করে।
Coherence and Cohesion Improve করার Practical Tips
প্রতিদিন IELTS sample essays পড়ার অভ্যাস করুন।
Essay পড়ার সময় লক্ষ্য করুন:
Writer কীভাবে introduction থেকে body paragraph-এ গেছে
কীভাবে ideas connect করেছে
কোন linking devices ব্যবহার করেছে
কীভাবে conclusion লিখেছে
এছাড়া নিজের essay লেখার পর review করুন:
কোনো paragraph topic থেকে সরে গেছে কি না
Sentences-এর মধ্যে clear connection আছে কি না
একই linking word বারবার ব্যবহার হয়েছে কি না
এই habit ধীরে ধীরে আপনার writing quality improve করবে।
IELTS Writing-এ একটা ভালো band score পেতে চাইলে শুধু grammar এবং vocabulary-এর উপর নির্ভর করলে হবে না। Coherence and Cohesion এমন দুটি skill যা আপনার essay-কে organised, professional এবং examiner-friendly করে তোলে। মনে রাখবেন, একটি essay তখনই effective হয় যখন reader কোনো confusion ছাড়াই শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত আপনার ideas follow করতে পারে। তাই essay লেখার সময় logical structure, clear paragraphing এবং natural linking-এর উপর গুরুত্ব দিন।
নিয়মিত practice এবং proper feedback-এর মাধ্যমে Coherence and Cohesion skill উন্নত করা সম্ভব। আর একবার এই skill আয়ত্তে চলে এলে IELTS Writing Task 2-এ ভালো score অর্জন করা অনেক সহজ হয়ে যাবে।
