English grammar শেখার সময় সবচেয়ে common এবং confusing ভুলগুলোর মধ্যে একটি হলো “Its” এবং “It’s” এর ব্যবহার। অনেক English learner, এমনকি intermediate level-এর শিক্ষার্থীরাও writing করার সময় এই দুইটি শব্দ গুলিয়ে ফেলেন। IELTS Writing, academic essay, email writing, social media caption অথবা professional communication—সব জায়গাতেই এই ভুল প্রায়ই দেখা যায়।
মজার বিষয় হলো, এই দুইটি শব্দ দেখতে প্রায় একই রকম হলেও এদের অর্থ এবং ব্যবহার সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা। শুধু একটি apostrophe (') থাকার কারণে পুরো sentence-এর meaning পরিবর্তন হয়ে যেতে পারে। তাই Spoken English এবং English Writing উভয় ক্ষেত্রেই “Its” এবং “It’s” এর পার্থক্য জানা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

It’s কী?
It’s হলো “It is” অথবা “It has”-এর short form বা contraction। অর্থাৎ, যখন আপনি “It is” অথবা “It has” ছোট করে লিখতে চান, তখন “It’s” ব্যবহার করবেন। Example:
It’s raining outside.
It’s a beautiful day.

It’s been a long time since we met.
প্রথম sentence-এ: It’s raining outside. এখানে “It’s” এর পূর্ণরূপ হলো: It is raining outside. আবার, It’s been a long time. এখানে “It’s” এর পূর্ণরূপ: It has been a long time. অর্থাৎ “It’s” দেখলে প্রথমেই ভাবুন, এটি কি “It is” অথবা “It has” দিয়ে replace করা যায়? যদি যায়, তাহলে “It’s” সঠিক।
Its কী?
Its হলো একটি possessive adjective। এটি কোনো জিনিস, প্রাণী বা object-এর মালিকানা বা ownership বোঝাতে ব্যবহার করা হয়। বাংলায় বলতে গেলে “তার” বা “এটির” অর্থ প্রকাশ করে। Example:
The company changed its logo.
The dog wagged its tail.
The tree lost its leaves.
The phone has lost its battery power.
প্রথম sentence-এ: The company changed its logo. এখানে logo কোম্পানির। অর্থাৎ ownership বোঝানো হচ্ছে। তাই “its” ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।
আবার, The dog wagged its tail. এখানে tail কুকুরের। তাই “its” ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।
সহজে মনে রাখার কৌশল
অনেক শিক্ষার্থী confusion এড়ানোর জন্য একটি simple trick ব্যবহার করেন। যখন “It’s” দেখবেন, sentence-এ “It is” বসিয়ে দেখুন। যদি sentence অর্থপূর্ণ থাকে, তাহলে “It’s” সঠিক।
Example:
It’s a nice place.
Replace করুন:
It is a nice place.
Sentence ঠিক আছে।তাই “It’s” সঠিক। এখন দেখুন:
The cat cleaned it’s fur.
Replace করি:
The cat cleaned it is fur.
Sentence সম্পূর্ণ ভুল হয়ে যাচ্ছে।তাই এখানে “it’s” নয়, “its” হবে। সঠিক sentence:
The cat cleaned its fur.
কেন মানুষ সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল করে?
এর প্রধান কারণ হলো possessive noun-এর ক্ষেত্রে আমরা সাধারণত apostrophe ব্যবহার করি। উদাহরণ:
Rahim’s book
Arif’s car
Teacher’s office
তাই অনেকেই মনে করেন “its”-এর ক্ষেত্রেও apostrophe ব্যবহার করতে হবে।কিন্তু English grammar-এ personal pronoun-এর possessive form একটু আলাদা। দেখুন:
My → Mine
Your → Yours
His → His
Her → Hers
Their → Theirs
Its → Its
এখানে possessive form-এ apostrophe ব্যবহার হয় না। এ কারণেই “its” সঠিক এবং “it’s” ভুল।

It’s a wonderful opportunity. কারণ এখানে “It is a wonderful opportunity” বোঝানো হয়েছে।
IELTS Writing-এ কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ?
IELTS Writing Task 1 এবং Task 2-এ grammatical accuracy একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ scoring factor। যদি আপনি বারবার “its” এবং “it’s” ভুল করেন, examiner আপনার grammar accuracy-তে negative impression পেতে পারেন। বিশেষ করে Band 6 থেকে Band 7 বা তার উপরে যেতে চাইলে ছোট grammar mistakes কমানো খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। নিচের sentence দুটি দেখুন:
The company increased its profits last year.
It’s clear that technology has changed education.
দুই ক্ষেত্রেই ভিন্ন grammar rule কাজ করছে। এই ধরনের ছোট বিষয়গুলো ঠিকভাবে ব্যবহার করতে পারলে আপনার writing আরও professional এবং natural শোনাবে।
Spoken English-এ এর প্রভাব
Spoken English-এ “its” এবং “it’s” শুনতে প্রায় একই রকম শোনায়। তাই speaking-এর সময় সাধারণত সমস্যা হয় না। কিন্তু writing-এর সময় পার্থক্যটি স্পষ্টভাবে জানা প্রয়োজন।
কারণ professional email, IELTS essay, assignment, report অথবা social media content লিখতে গেলে এই ভুল আপনার credibility কমিয়ে দিতে পারে। যারা Spoken English-এর পাশাপাশি writing skill উন্নত করতে চান, তাদের জন্য এই grammar rule আয়ত্ত করা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
Final Rule You Must Remember
মাত্র একটি নিয়ম মনে রাখুন:
“It’s” = It is / It has
আর
“Its” = Possession বা ownership
যদি ownership বোঝায়, তাহলে Its। আর যদি “It is” অথবা “It has” বোঝায়, তাহলে It’s।
