IELTS preparation করতে গিয়ে অনেক শিক্ষার্থী Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading, Writing এবং Speaking নিয়ে প্রচুর সময় ব্যয় করলেও Reported Speech-এর মতো একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Grammar Topic প্রায়ই অবহেলিত থেকে যায়। অথচ বাস্তবতা হলো, Reported Speech শুধু Grammar-এর একটি Chapter নয়; এটি এমন একটি language skill যা IELTS Speaking, IELTS Writing এবং এমনকি Academic Communication-এর ক্ষেত্রেও আপনার English expression-কে অনেক বেশি natural, professional এবং advanced করে তোলে।
বিশেষ করে IELTS Writing Task 1, Task 2 অথবা Speaking Part 2 এবং Part 3-এ যখন অন্য কারও মতামত, বক্তব্য, recommendation, advice কিংবা observation উল্লেখ করার প্রয়োজন হয়, তখন Direct Speech-এর পরিবর্তে Reported Speech ব্যবহার করতে পারলে আপনার sentence structure অনেক বেশি sophisticated এবং band-score friendly হয়ে ওঠে।

Reported Speech কী?
Reported Speech হলো অন্য কারও বলা কথা নিজের ভাষায় বা indirect form-এ প্রকাশ করা। Direct Speech-এ আমরা কারও কথাকে quotation marks-এর মধ্যে ঠিক যেমন বলা হয়েছিল তেমনভাবেই লিখি। Example:
She said, “I am tired.”
কিন্তু যখন একই কথাকে নিজের ভাষায় প্রকাশ করা হয় তখন সেটি হয় Reported Speech।
She said that she was tired. অর্থাৎ, quotation বাদ দিয়ে, sentence structure পরিবর্তন করে এবং প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী tense adjustment করে অন্যের বক্তব্য উপস্থাপন করাই হলো Reported Speech।
IELTS-এ Reported Speech কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ?
অনেক শিক্ষার্থী মনে করেন IELTS Grammar মানে শুধু Tense, Voice অথবা Conditional Sentences। কিন্তু IELTS examiner মূলত evaluate করেন আপনি কতটা flexible এবং natural way-তে English ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।
Reported Speech ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে আপনি:

STEP 1: Reporting Verb খুঁজুন
সাধারণত sentence শুরু হয়:
He said
She said
They told
The teacher explained
The doctor advised
এই ধরনের reporting verbs দিয়ে।
STEP 2: Quotation Marks বাদ দিন
Direct Speech:
He said, “I like coffee.”
Reported Speech:
He said that he liked coffee.
STEP 3: Pronoun Change করুন
Speaker অনুযায়ী pronoun পরিবর্তন করতে হবে।
Direct:
Sara said, “I am happy.”
Reported:
Sara said that she was happy.
এখানে "I" পরিবর্তন হয়ে "she" হয়েছে।
STEP 4: Tense Backshift Rule মনে রাখুন
এটাই Reported Speech-এর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ।

Speaking Test-এ অনেক সময় আপনাকে অন্য কারও opinion mention করতে হয়। যেমন:
"My teacher said that consistent practice is the key to achieving a high IELTS band score."
"My parents advised me to focus more on communication skills rather than memorizing vocabulary lists."
এই ধরনের expressions আপনার speaking-কে অনেক বেশি natural এবং advanced শোনায়।
IELTS Writing-এ Reported Speech-এর ব্যবহার
Academic এবং General Writing উভয় ক্ষেত্রেই Reported Speech অত্যন্ত useful। ধরুন আপনি education নিয়ে essay লিখছেন।
Instead of writing:
Teachers say, "Students should read more books."
You can write:
Many teachers believe that students should read more books to improve their language skills and academic performance.

Pronoun ভুল করা
Incorrect:
Rahim said that I was tired.
Correct:
Rahim said that he was tired.
Tense Change না করা
Incorrect:
She said that she is busy.
Correct:
She said that she was busy.
Unnecessary Quotation ব্যবহার করা
Incorrect:
He said that "he was ready."
Correct:
He said that he was ready.
IELTS Band Score বাড়াতে Reported Speech কীভাবে Practice করবেন?
শুধু rules মুখস্থ করলে Reported Speech শেখা সম্ভব নয়। Practical application সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। প্রতিদিন:

Real-Life Application of Reported Speech
Reported Speech শুধু IELTS-এর জন্য নয়, professional communication-এর ক্ষেত্রেও অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Business emails, meetings, presentations, academic reports, workplace discussions এবং university assignments-এ প্রায় প্রতিদিন Reported Speech ব্যবহার করা হয়।
যখন আপনি বলেন:
"The manager informed us that the meeting had been postponed." অথবা
"The professor explained that regular revision improves long-term retention."
তখন আপনি বাস্তব জীবনের professional English ব্যবহার করছেন।
